BIOCHEMICAL NOTES: Destroyed by high temperatures; oxidizes rapidly. * Sulphur food is remarkably good for the promotion of bile and liver action. If sulphur is lacking there will be a decrease of bile which would result in constipation. * Remember that sulphur food must not be cooked. Cooked sulphur will have a bad effect, because it is more rapidly converted into gas which interferes with oxidation. Do not eat excessive sulphur foods because of the cumulative effects that it can have. * Keratin contains sulphur. If there is not very much sulphur in the hair, it is black. Persons with red hair tend to have more sulphur in their systems. * Sulphur is needed by the skin but excessive consumption of sulphur can irritate it. Sulphur tends to drive impurities out of the body through the skin. It is best just to let such impurities out of the system by leaving them alone. * If a sulphur food tends to give you gas, salt it well because salt prevents sulphur from being converted into gas. * Dark rings around the eyes may indicate sulphur deficiency. Sulphur needs iodine to work properly. Sulphur overwhelms the alkalinity of the blood and makes the system acid. * The sulfuring of dried foods especially dried fruits is cumulative and results in autointoxication Drug sulphur, inorganic sulphur, and sulphur mineral waters are not compatible to the body. * Sulphur must be balanced in the body in order to have proper neurological and psychological health. A proper reserve insures consistent temperature and regulates nerve impulses, but too much or to little sulphur upsets the functions in the body. Indication of deficiency are fretting, pouting, poor appetite in the morning, anemic looking skin, and extremes of variety and change. Indication of excess sulphur is face burning and calls for foods high in chlorine and magnesium. * The activity of sulphur affects every cell enabling it to release toxic substances through agitation. A man weighing 160 pounds has approximately 4 ounces of sulphur in his body. * Free sulphur is utilized hourly. Sulphur is needed in the sexual system for reproduction, without it there would be no life.
